Roundhouse Kick

03.20.2009

The Bite:
Wanna grab a good cocktail with one swift move? Kapow: Roundhouse Spirits. This Longmont-based craft distiller makes just two products, gin and corretto coffee liqueur, and it makes them well. The gin's a worthy opponent for any premium brand, made with 11 organic botanicals like juniper berries, chamomile, and lavender that give it a subtly floral taste and a spicy finish. The coretto's an inspired combo of locally roasted espresso, vanilla beans, and grain alcohol that tastes exactly like coffee (not some mocha-y fake flav), but with a punch - pour it over ice. Bonus: Unlike most distillers, RS reuses water instead of discarding it, saving precious gallons for the ice in our G&T. Hi-yeah!
Wanna Try:
Roundhouse Spirits, available at Mondo Vino, 3601 W. 32nd Ave. Map It (303-458-3858). Gin, $30/750 milliliters; corretto $25/750 milliliters.

Cocktail Fact

Chuck Norris, who made the roundhouse kick famous, was only the third Westerner to achieve the Tae Kwan Do rank of Eighth Degree Black Belt Grand Master.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Denver Biters enjoy two organic gin drinks instead of ones made with conventional gin, we'll keep eight martini glasses full of pesticides from pouring into the environment.
