Wax On, Wax Off - Ski Week

12.17.2008

The Bite:
imageWanna defend your board against rocks and other crud? Rub a little Purl Wax on your snowboard or skis, Biter-san. Purl's All Natural Purple Wax had us hitting speeds typically seen only in Warren Miller flicks (of course, ski patrol nabbed us for something called "out of control skiing") - and it's totally biodegradable. Unlike most glide-y stuff, PW doesn't off-gas any perfluorocarbons (say that three times fast), greenhouse gases that may be linked to cancer. Plus, PW uses wind energy at its Summit County plant and serves up its wax in reusable velvet bags - save up 12, and you can trade 'em in for a free puck of wax. What a kick.
Wanna Try:
Purl Wax, available at REI, 1416 Platte St. Map It (303-756-3100). All Natural Purple All Temp Wax, $10.

Cocktail Fact

The yellow 1950 Chevy convertible that Daniel polishes in the "wax on, wax off" scene of The Karate Kid was later given to actor Ralph Macchio as a gift - just like in the film; RM still owns it.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 Denver Biters use eco-friendly ski wax instead of the regular stuff, in a year we'll keep the weight of 14 pairs of skis (with bindings) in chems outta the environment.
