How Not to Crash (a Date)

First things first: Save wheely-poppin' for the driveway. From there, just keep a few things in mind as you roll.
  • Wear a helmet - see "Getting Prepped: Gear" for a cool option, and "Looking Good: Hair" to fix your 'do when you take it off.
  • Skip the headphones - at least while you're riding. (You can always listen to our iTunes playlist when you get to work...)
  • Wear look-at-me clothes - sort of "no duh," but put on reflective (or light-colored) clothing at night and bright shades during the day. Flip to "Looking Good: Clothes" for eco bike fashion.
  • Get a mirror - good for checking traffic...and your lipstick.
  • Attach a bell - fun to ring anyway, but obviously also lets people know you're coming.
  • Slow down after rains - the paint around sewer covers and crosswalks gets slippery when wet.
  • Lock it up tight - and not always in the same place, which deters potential bike-poachers from scoping out your area.
Try:
Consider doubling up on a lock. Assistant Editor Erica uses a U-lock around the frame and weaves a cable lock through the back tire, frame, and U-lock - no one's stealing her ride.
