Lighten Your Load

Whether or not it's dark when you leave the house or the office (hello, workaholics), outfit your wheels with a headlight so people can see you. Wind-, solar-, and magnet-powered LED lights keep batteries outta landfills (most batteries don't get recycled) and last way longer than traditional bike lights.
  • Reelight SL 120 Magnet Bike Light - magnet-powdered red and white blinking LEDs that mount to your axle. Just start pedaling to make 'em light up - no batteries required...ever ($60).
  • Owleye Solar Headlight - solar-powered, water-resistant white LED that attaches to the handlebars; constant and flash modes; up to 16 hours of light per charge ($20).
  • Green Power Saved Bicycle Fan - wind-powered, fanlike, bright green LED light that you mount on your handlebars; pedaling makes the fan stronger, which makes the light brighter ($5).
Stat: More than half of all cycling fatalities stem from riding at night without taillights and headlights.
DIY:
Make sure your bike has reflectors or make them yourself with old CDs (Mariah Carey's Greatest Hits, anyone?). Fasten 'em (shiny side out) with wire to your spokes.
