Bike

Pedal to Used Metal

So yeah, you'll need a bike. Maybe you donated your old one to make way for new clothes or left it at Mom's way back when. Before you pony up for spankin' new, first try upgrading what you've got by swapping or buying used - it'll keep oldies out of landfills and newbies out of resource-intensive production.
  • Craigslist and Freecycle - old reliables for finding mountain bikes, vintage cruisers, and gear on the cheap (or even free).
  • Used Bikes Online - the name says it all - search listings for used and sometimes free bikes, or sell your own.
  • League of American Bicyclists - find a full list of bike shops near you, then just call to see if they sell old or new.
  • Community Bike Programs - more and more cities are introducing bike-sharing programs. Check this directory of current ones in the United States.
If you're mooning over one that's schmancy-new, consider going in on it with a work-from-home friend to trim the cost, and check these out:
  • E-Zip 2008 Trailz Hybrid Electric Bike - a small motor gives you a boost when you need it (up to 18 mph) for hills. Plus, you can tote your work stuff on the back rack ($298).
  • Xtracycle Radish and Cargo Van Kit - for those looking for serious bells and whistles; tote your laptop, briefcase, even your change of clothes on the rack or in side bags in back; 8 speeds; LED-lit pedals ($1,289).

Your local bike shop or bike coalition should be able to help you find a bike buddy, or look for that coworker in the spandex (and helmet). Nothing like a pal + peer pressure to get you motivated.
