The Biter Strikes Back
If hiring managers are giving you the cold shoulder - or you'd rather be the one yelling at work - consider starting a green-themed business. Hey, it worked for us.
Three green businesses you can run out of your garage if you've got the skills:
- Scanning, organizing, and backing up other people's family photos and records digitally saves people time and storage space, and you can properly recycle materials they don't want to hold onto after.
- Planning parties with an eco twist - with a little know-how (and panache), you can help people green-ify their events with reusable dishware, local foods, and biodegradable decorations.
- eBay drop-off shop - help other folks sell stuff they're getting rid of (see "Let Go of that Too-Tight Star Wars Tee"); you handle the packing and shipping details and take a fee off the top.
Five eco-preneurs that had a great green idea and made it happen:
- Ellu - designer Leslie Pozen got inspiration to start her handbag line after a visit to Peru and just launched a limited edition charity collection where 50% of the sale goes to Peruvian families in need.
- Lucky Earth - this husband and wife duo was inspired to create this waterless, nontoxic car wash company after finding that their oldest kid has serious chemical sensitivities.
- Green Paws - the founder's pup was allergic to everything (aww...) so he created this line of green pet care products, free of harsh chems and fragrances.
- Green Nest - this eco-goodies-for-the-home company was hatched when its cofounder, a former interior designer, discovered that her house was full of carpets and cleaning products that were making her sick.
- Veev - former Goldman Sachs bankers, the Reum brothers were looking for a way to green up the booze business and found success with their innovative açai spirit.
