Dig Up Dirt

The Bite:
imageWant the dirt on where to get the freshest produce in town? Next week, McGrath Family Farms - gourmet vegetable supplier to LA's trendiest eateries - will debut the southland's newest CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. It'll set you up with enough fruits and veggies to feed four peeps for a week: strawberries, heirloom tomatoes, squash, carrots, corn, we could go on. And will: Beets. Fifteen types of lettuce. (Ok, we'll stop.) Don't live nearby? Get together a group of 30 or more (think clubs, community groups, etc.), and the McGraths will deliver to your chosen location each Thursday. Call the farm for participating groups near you or try other CSAs. The dirt on the McGrath fam? It's called soil.
Wanna Try:
McGrath Family Farms (805-983-1211). CSA opening, Mar. 17, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Central Avenue at Highway 101, Oxnard; Farm pickup, $35; group delivery, $40 each.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters buy only locally grown food for a year, we'll save 2.25 bil gal of gas.
