Earning Your Beads

The Bite:
imageThink flashing your ta-tas on Mardi Gras is the only way to get good beads? Think again. Up your cred by snagging some mala beads from LA-based The Y Catalog, which carries a slew of organic goodies from bath salts to workout threads, and 10% of all sales goes to nonprofs like Trees for the Future and the Organic Farming Research Fund. Unlike traditional PVC plastic beads, which release toxins during production and are often produced in sweatshops, YC's mala beads are made from fair-trade gemstones like amethysts (see photo), garnets, and rose quartz. (We like to wrap these 108-bead beauts around our wrists.) OK, you've earned your beads now.

Cocktail Fact

The city of New Orleans determines how many people attended Mardi Gras by the weight of the garbage it collects.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters wear one strand of Y Sadhana amethyst mala beads instead of traditional Mardi Gras beads, we'll donate a collective $68,900 to help LA's homeless and at-risk youth.
