Lettuce Be

04.02.2008

The Bite:
imageIf you find yourself in times of food trouble, queue up at Tender Greens, a sidewalk café serving meals made with just-picked organic lettuce and other veggies and herbs from Oxnard's Scarborough Farms. We're big fans of the Big Salads, especially the Happy Vegan, made with hummus, tabbouleh, tiny pasta pearls, and greens - even the carnivores among us didn't miss the meat. Craving comfort? Try a Hot Plate - which includes an entree (such as line-caught tuna or free-range chicken), mashed potatoes, and a simple salad. You can watch the chefs prep your food; grab a beer or glass of wine or nonalcoholic (if you must) Rosé Vignette; then head to the back patio. No need for words of wisdom, just eat.
Wanna Try:
Tender Greens, 9523 Culver Blvd., Culver City (310-842-8300). Happy Vegan, $10.

Cocktail Fact

The Oxford American Dictionary's 2007 word of the year was locavore: people who consciously make an effort to eat only foods grown or harvested within 100 miles of where they live.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters eat 1 lb of locally produced food per week, we'll save 2,500 lbs of CO2 emissions from polluting our air.
