One Man's Trash...

03.25.2009

The Bite:
…is another man's chic new lamp or armchair or sculpture - at least when that man is Aaron Kramer. This Venice-based artist's latest show puts his motto - "Trash is the failure of imagination" – to work. Through mid-April, check out his stuff - both functional (a French club chair made from wine corks) and fanciful (a sculpture fashioned out of old street sweeper bristles), all of which helps keep landfills from expanding. You can just browse, but you can also buy; our fave of his bright ideas: a stylin' pendant lamp made from about 800 discarded coffee stirrers (see photo). Hey, to each his own.

Wanna Try:
Aaron Kramer's show at the ReDiscover Center; through Apr. 20; 12958 W. Washington Blvd., LA. Map It (310-393-3636). Work for sale at The Urban Craft Center, 2433 Main St., Santa Monica. Map It (310-392-0139); and Altered Space Gallery, 1221 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice. Map It (310-452-8121). Coffee stirrer lamp, $400.

Cocktail Fact

At nearly 45 feet tall and 15 feet across, Portugal's Whistler Tree is the world's largest and oldest cork tree, producing enough material to cork 100,000 bottles of wine every 9 years.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biter artists repurpose 1 pound of cork (about 133 corks), we'll keep the weight of 57 Picassos outta landfills.
