Over the Riva and Through the Woods...

03.02.2009

The Bite:
...to Jason Travi's new restaurant we go. Take a sleigh ride (or, you know, a cab) to Riva – cousin of the aptly named Fraîche - for casual-chic (read: date-y) Mediterranean-Italian apps, entrées, and desserts. Hit the pizza bar for some vino and the surprisingly not-too-heavy Patata Semplice (thin-crust potato pizza with crème fraîche and rosemary) with potatoes from Weiser Farms, or nosh the roasted beets (with aged goat cheese and pistachios) from McGrath Family Farm. The market-fresh fare's made with mostly organic ingredients, zapping transport emissions and pesticides too. Wash it down with the biting Star Anise Blackberry Pink Peppercorn Gin - one of its seasonal, housemade cocktails. Just make sure your horse, er, friend knows the way home.
Wanna Try:
Riva, 312 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica. Map It (310-451-7482). Beets, $12; Patata Semplice, $14; cocktails, $9-$11.

Cocktail Fact

In 2005, a pizza restaurant owner and a team of 200 helpers in Iowa Falls, IA, set a new record for the world's largest rectangular pizza: 129 feet by 98.6 feet, with 4,000 pounds of cheese and 700 pounds of sauce.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters chow on a locally sourced meal instead of one made with ingredients shipped cross-country once a week for a year, we'll keep the CO2 produced by 23 round-trip flights from LA to NYC outta the atmosphere.
