Local Bakery

Tough Cookie

04.13.2009

The Bite:
Got a sweet tooth that's hard to satisfy? Here's an easy strategy: Appease it at Culver City's newest seasonal sweets spot, local ingredient lover Platine Bakery. Stop by the tiny, grab-and-go shop for cookies, brownies, and farmers-market-finds-turned-weekly-specials like the Rhubarb "Alsatian Tart" made with marinated rhubarb (from Culver City FM, natch). Or dive into the überthick and rich Chocolate Daisies Pot de Crème, mixed with a hint of chamomile. (Coming this summer: a line of organic cookies.) The only real challenge? Picking which one you want most.
Why Care?:
Buying food produced with local ingredients means less fuel used (and less emissions spewed) to get it to your plate.
We endured a severe yet amazing food coma after a tasty bout with the stellar chewy Caramel Top Brownies.
Wanna Try:
Platine Bakery, 10850 Washington Blvd., Culver City (310-559-9933). Rhubarb "Alsatian Tart," $5 (bigger than most desserts).

Cocktail Fact

In total, there have been 37 different animals featured on Nabisco’s popular animal crackers since 1902, but you’ll only find 17 animals these days.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters opt for a sweet treat made with locally grown ingredients instead of nonlocal stuff, we'll save enough gas for a round-trip drive from LA to Pittsburgh, PA.
