Solar-Powered Car Wash

Valley Girl

04.06.2009

The Bite:
Like, OMG, the Valley Car Wash in Van Nuys is totally the first car wash ever in the world to go solar. This drive-thru spot's 530 photovoltaic (solar) panels generate about 95% of its electricity, pollutant-free – 'nuff to handle 100,000 cars annually. That takes a bite out of the 48 tons of neurotoxin mercury (grody to the max) that conventional power plants spit out every year. Plus, after cleaning your ride, rims to sunroof, VC's purifying pump recycles the water. Bitchin'.
Why Care?:
Renewable energy like solar reduces our dependence on carbon-based fuel and cuts greenhouse gases – keeping our planet squeaky clean.
We hit the Early Bird special (basic wash and vacuum for $9, Mon.-Thu., 8-10 am), and grabbed coffee from nearby Rico Mango & Honey Blends while we waited.
Wanna Try:
Valley Car Wash, 7530 Van Nuys Blvd. (818-997-7600). Basic Wash (includes wash and vacuum), $11-$15 (price increases with large cars); detailing $55-$180.

Cocktail Fact

The 1983 film Valley Girl is the first movie in which Nicolas Coppola is billed as Nicolas Cage.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters get a solar-powered car wash instead of a conventional scrub, we’ll offset the CO2 emitted by powering a refrigerator for more than 5 years.
