City Break: Rancho Bernardo

Weekend at Bernardo's

06.24.2009

The Bite:
Dying of boredom in LA? No need to fake excitement about a lux weekend at San Diego's eco hot spot Rancho Bernardo Inn. Dine at its superseasonal resto, El Bizcocho (its seven-course, prix-fixe menu is well worth the $105 if you can swing it), and get a Made Fresh Daily treatment at the new spa - it starts off with a rousing lemon body scrub (made with lems from the property). Cabin fever? Head to the ocean, check out ecofied Barona Valley Ranch Casino, or grab a beer at mostly solar-powered (and very tasty) Stone Brewery - it's killer.
Wanna Try:
San Diego, CA, about 3 hours by train. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, Union Station, 800 N. Alameda St., Los Angeles. Coach, $68/roundtrip. Rancho Bernardo, 17550 Rancho Bernardo Oaks Dr., San Diego (858-675-8550). Starts at $209/night. Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino, 1932 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside (619-443-2300). Stone Brewery, 1999 Citracado Pkwy., Escondido (760-471-4999). Arrogant Bastard Ale, $6/1 liter.

Cocktail Fact

During the filming of 1989's Weekend at Bernie's, the stunt double for Bernie suffered a few broken ribs due to and the various tribulations of playing a dead man.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters stay at hotels with efficient toilets, faucets, and showerheads, after just one weekend we'll save enough water to fill about 3,270 hot tubs.
