Crafty Classes

Who's on Third?

06.26.2009

The Bite:
New crafty spot Hands-On 3rd. (What's still on second.) Dust off your DIY cap for green-living workshops like making your own eco-cleaners or growing an organic kitchen garden in the hip-but-homey front room (see photo) and the spacious, machine-and-supply-filled studio. The craftmaster teachers bring a cool mod sensibility to old-school skills like sewing, quilting, even millinery (hat making - we looked it up) during the multisession classes that'll help you repurpose stuff from your Goodwill pile. We're all Abbott that.
Why Care?:
Learning how to repair or reinvent your overloved clothes saves the energy, water, and materials required to create and ship new ones.
Complimentary tea's a nice touch, and so is the mini-library of crafting books and the rotating exhibits by local artists and artisans (a new one each month).
Wanna Try:
Hands-On 3rd, 8377 W. Third St., WeHo (323-655-0515). Healthy Household Workshop, $50 + $8 materials fee; Sewing 101, $140/series of three classes; Monthly Sewing Rebellion workshop, free.

Cocktail Fact

Abbott and Costello's famous "Who's on First" baseball comedy act has been translated into nearly 30 languages.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters repair the torn seam on their jackets instead of buying new ones, we'll keep the weight of about 17,000 sewing machines in textiles out of production.
