Tree-for-All
The Bite

If you see Andy Lipkis, founder of
TreePeople, riding his bike around Venice or taking the bus downtown, give him a high-five. Since creating the nonprofit as a teen, he's been LA's Johnny Appleseed, inspiring thousands of residents to plant trees (2 mil and counting...) around the city. Years ago, he spearheaded a project that put 1 mil trees in the ground in just three years, at no cost to the city (many said it would take 20 years and cost $200 mil). These days, he's heading up Rainwater as a Resource - TreePeople's plan to help replenish LA's local groundwater supply, reduce the need for water importation, and decrease the risk of local flooding. That rain the other week? Just one inch, captured from six catchments, collected 1.25 mil gal of water...a free-for-all for Angelenos and the local trees alike.
