Infant Stimulation Toys

Debating the benefits of your baby's latest toy?

The Bite:
Here's a plus: Introduce your infant to nontoxic toys with high-contrast color. You'll stimulate their eyesight as it develops over the first year, without wasting resources on plastic whatchamacallits. Scales, tipped.
The Benefits:
  • No arguing over chems. Our picks are made of nontoxic materials like chem-free rubberwood, lead-free paint, and soy inks.
  • Supporting your wallet. We found a free e-book and graphics you can print out at home (on scrap or recycled paper, natch).
  • Seeing your point. Babies' vision develops slowly, so clearly delineated images are most visible - and enjoyable - during this dev stage.
Wanna Try:
  • ImagiPlay EarthWorms - sustainable rubberwood, 8-inch developmental toy with contrasting color segments in natural and red lead-free paint; fair labor ($13).
  • Wee Gallery Baby Flash Cards - box set of recyclable cards with rounded corners printed with black and white farm animal images in soy ink; also in jungle, garden, and sea themes ($12).
  • Adventures in Black and White - free downloadable e-book with high-contrast pictures of everyday objects (doll, tree, cat, etc.).
  • DIY Bite: Print graphics on recycled paper to make your own high-contrast mobile with directions from Instructables.

Timeout

Biter Faye Kommers of Bozeman, MT, mounted some high-contrast art cards next to 7-month-old Laila's changing table. Every day they bid good morning to the animals - as well as that other familiar face, President Obama's, which somehow made it into the nursery gallery, as Faye explains in today's blog.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters choose an eco developmental toy instead of a plastic one, we'll keep the weight of 54 strollers in synthetic materials outta production.
