Pinkeye Remedies

Eye for an Eye

The Bite:
Kid got a punishing case of pinkeye? Retaliate, and treat your kiddo's eye inflammation with natural remedies. These cures and homemade soothers are safe, nontoxic, and'll send pinkeye (conjunctivitis) into Exodus.
The Benefits:
  • More than 80% of rivers contain traces of synthetic meds like antibiotics and antihistamines, drugs used to treat infections like pinkeye. These alternatives keep water clean.
  • Plant-based and homeopathic treatments for conjunctivitis are an (Old) Testament to savings - they cost way less compared with prescriptions.
  • Some of these fixes valiantly fight back eye irritants with ingredients you already have.
Wanna Try:
Note: If your child's conjunctivitis doesn't respond to natural remedies within 2-3 days, check with a pediatrician. It may be a more serious infection.

  • Eyebright Tincture - eyebright is an anti-inflammatory herb; add three drops of tincture to one tablespoon of boiled water; when cool, use as an eyewash ($10/1 ounce).
  • Colloidal Silver - a natural antibiotic; dilute a few drops in water and use as an eyewash ($10/2 ounces).
  • Similasan Pink Eye Relief - a homeopathic remedy with euphrasia, a derivative of eyebright that stimulates the eye's natural ability to relieve redness, watery discharge, and burning ($10/0.33 ounces).

DIY Bites
  • Steep chamomile tea for 5 minutes, let cool, and use as an eyewash, or place cooled tea bags on closed eyes for about 10 minutes to relieve symptoms.
  • Cover eye with potato peelings for 15 minutes (hold in place with a scarf); the tuber's natural astringents reduce inflammation.
  • Breast milk - no, we're not kidding: For nursing moms, this is a cheap, easy cure; squirt directly into the eye 3 times a day, or express milk into a sterile cup and use an eyedropper.
  • Pinkeye is highly contagious so prevention's key. Urge your kids to wash their hands repeatedly, especially before and after touching their eyes or face. If they're infected, don't share towels, pillows, or linens, and disinfect common surfaces like telephones, remote controls, and door handles.

Timeout

When Mama Biter Melissa Goldberg was pregnant with her second child, she got pinkeye three times. Too bad she didn't learn about these remedies until later...

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters use a homeopathic remedy to treat pinkeye instead of an antihistamine, we'll keep the weight of 39 3-year-olds in synthetic meds from ending up in waterways.

Tips Like This

Sometimes pink eye is actually part of an allergic reaction. My daughter gets pink eye with her spring allergies, but it's allergic conjunctivitis not viral. She had to bring in a note to tell the school nurse that she wasn't contagious! The Similasan Eye drops helped clear her eyes up in addition to her allergy pill.
Kudos on the breastmilk suggestion. When my son was 5 weeks old he had conjunctivitis - I put two drops of breastmilk directly in his eye and the infection cleared up within 6 hours. Magic! For those who don't know, breastmilk has antibiotic properties.
