Kids' Reusable Water Bottles

Got a thirsty kid on your hands?

06.09.2009

The Bite:
Hop to it, and pick up a pint-size, stainless steel, reusable water bottle. Just like your grown-up size, it'll keep H2O (or any drink) portable without the disposable plastic water bottles when you're on the go.
The Benefits:
  • Not hustling bad chems. Some reusable plastic water bottles still contain the hormone disruptor BPA, which can leach into your children's drinking water. These stainless steel bottles are made from food-grade metal.
  • No rush of oil. Disposable plastic water bottles require 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to make and only about one in four get recycled. You just need one reusable bottle.
  • Hurry up and get one already. These minibottles are small and lightweight, so they fit easily in a backpack, purse (you know it'll end up there), or car cup holder.
Wanna Try:
  • Klean Kanteen - 12-ounce bottle with choice of a loop, sport, or flat cap made with BPA-free polypropylene (recyclable plastic #5); comes in orange, blue, black, pink, brown, or plain steel; also in 18-ounce size ($15-$17).
  • Pura - 18-ouncer with stainless loop cap; fits in most kids' lunch boxes; comes in blue, green, orange, light purple (see photo), or plain steel ($16).
  • Thermos Foogo - 12-ounce bottle with rubber spout and a bendable (and chewable, if they must), nontoxic silicone straw; keeps things hot or cold so you can use it for soups too; won't sweat, and comes in blue or pink, or a Hello Kitty design ($16).
  • EcoUsable - 10-ouncer with a loop cap made from nonleaching polypropylene; comes with color-coordinated sports clip; in metallic colors, some with designs like dinos or butterflies ($13).
Cash Saver:
Enter the word purabiter in the coupon field when you checkout at Pura, and get 20% off your order through Jul. 9.

Timeout

Leelee, age 4 (see photo), uses the Hello Kitty Foogo Thermos. Her mom, Gwen, trusts the leak-free snap enough to toss it in her purse with her phone.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 bitty Biters drink water (or any other bev) from a reusable water bottle instead of a disposable one, after 1 month we'll keep the weight of 312 strollers in plastic out of landfills.

What about Sigg? Their kid's bottles are adorable, and I personally prefer Sigg to Kleen Kanteen for my growed-up bottle...
I just discovered "The Bottle Shop" at www.Greensender.com. They personalize SIGG water bottles with names and images. I just got them as teacher gifts and my kids always know which bottles are theirs.
I agree with Kissi -- what about Sigg?! User friendly drinking tops and my daughters have a Hello Kitty and a Princess Unicorn bottle -- what more could a little girl want!
Got one for my first grader this past year. Need to get two more. I like the personalize idea. I might just try that.
Are you aware that these bottles contained BPA? Apparently they don't now, but can you really trust a company who lied in the first place. http://adage.com/article?article_id=138712
