Not So Bare Bones: Halloween Prep Week

10.16.2009

The Bite:
Skeletal wallet scaring you off Halloween extras? Instead of feeling rattled, try decorating with DIY crafts. Aside from saving cash, they'll engage your kiddos longer than the store-bought kind and keep a few resources outta the grave.
The Benefits:
  • You can make this holiday flair with stuff you already have and a few art supplies, so you'll spend fewer bones on new plastic and paper decorations.
  • Once the holiday's over, biodegradable decorations like leaves and egg cartons are good fodder for your compost pile, instead of the trash. No remains = no storage either.
  • Making your own Halloween decorations is fun for the kids and a breeze for you since they're doing most of the work.
Wanna Try:
  • Build a Scarecrow - use leaves collected from your yard to make a scarecrow to welcome trick-or-treaters.
  • Homemade Ghosts - stuff a white pillowcase or some sheets with newspaper or cloth, then tie off with a rubber band; or get fancy and make a "floating ghost" with arms.
  • Witch Crash - use clothes, and common garage and kitchen items to create this funny scene of the witch who couldn't fly.
  • Egg Carton Arachnids - turn old egg cartons into spiders with nontoxic craft paint.

Timeout

River Moore, 9, and Lily Moore, 7, in Santa Monica, CA, say their favorite part of Halloween decorating is stringing cobwebs around their front porch (and sometimes each other).

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters help their kids make Halloween decorations from stuff at home instead of buying something premade, we'll keep the weight of 600 5-year-old trick-or-treaters in plastic and new paper out of the waste stream.
