Healthier Sodas

Ready to commit to a new thirst quencher?

The Bite:
Here's a proposal: Say "I do" to low-sugar sodas with real fruit juice. Most pop's loaded with caffeine and artificial sweeteners. These tasty drinks satisfy your kid's cola cravings in a healthier way. Yes!
The Benefits:
  • Not altar-ing our crops. Conventional sodas contain refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which both often come from pesticide-heavy genetically modified crops like corn. These use real fruit juice.
  • Engaging in better health. A conventional 12-ounce soda contains almost 13 teaspoons of diabetes-linked refined sugar, and 45-100 milligrams of caffeine (as much as coffee). No added sugar or caffeine here.
  • Wedded to better biz. These soda makers are dedicated to environmental stewardship, community involvement, and consumer health.
Wanna Try:
  • The Switch - 100% carbonated juice with no added sweeteners; in eight flavors including Fruit Punch and Watermelon Strawberry; available at Whole Foods ($24/24).
  • R.W. Knudsen Spritzers - soda made with sparkling juice with no added sugars or syrups; in 17 flavors such as Vanilla Cream and Cherry Cola; also: Spritzer Lights with half the juice; RWK recycles 96% of production material; widely available ($8/6).
  • Izze Sparkling Juice - made from 70% juice and sparkling soda; in eight fruit flavors; Izze supports children's education around the world; found at Whole Foods, Starbucks, and Target ($6/4).
  • Fizzy Lizzy - 50% juice and 50% fizzy water; in eight flavors - we head straight for Costa Rican Pineapple or Pacific Raspberry Lemon ($5/4).

Timeout

John Elish, 3, and Cassie Elish, 6, of NYC are Fizzy Lizzy fans.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters switch to beverages without high-fructose corn syrup, in a year we'll keep the weight of 3,570 bridegrooms in processed sugars (and 135,000 bushels of pesticide-treated corn) out of production.

Indeed, HFCS is for the birds, or really for no one. But when it comes to canned soda what about BPA exposure from the can? Are you aware of any canned sodas that do not contain BPA in there liners? For now our family is sticking to bottled soda for our sweet treats, but admittedly I miss the can. Any advice? Peace, Donna Weidenhaft
we are huge fans of fizzy lizzy's yakima valley grape soda - it's delicious with a more sophisticated favor than other grape sodas... i drank it often in lieu of wine when pregnant!
