Organic Apple Sauce

Is snacking on fruit alien to your kid?

The Bite:
Try a different plan(et). We tasted our way through the grocery shelves so you can tempt your kiddos with organic apple sauces that are all fruit and no added sugar, or other science fiction.
The Benefits:
  • Spotting unidentified toxins. The EPA says that kids are more sensitive than adults to pesticides, which are linked to neurological and developmental disorders. Also apples are #2 on the top 10 list to buy organic.
  • Keeping sugar out of the crop circle. Some fruit sauces contain added sweeteners. These are made with apples and ascorbic acid, a naturally occurring preservative - that's it.
  • Hovering over better nutrition. Apple sauce is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and cancer-fighting flavonoids (a type of antioxidant).

Wanna Try:

Timeout

In-house Biter taster Roxie (here on the run with flip flops...we don't know why either...) loves Eden Organic Apple Sauce, and often tries feeding it to Papa.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters switch to organic apple sauce, we'll keep the weight of 80 Johnny Appleseeds in pesticide-treated fruit outta kids' bodies.

It's even easier to make your own. Just steam peeled, cored, organic apple chunks until they're soft, then blend in a food processor. I store it all in a large glass container in the fridge, then dole out small amounts in smaller reusable containers for my daughter to bring to school. Much less waste than buying single-serve packages at the store. I haven't worked out the math but I think the cost is comparable. And trust me, this doesn't take much time--I work full-time and wouldn't do it if it did!

I second the Trader Joe's suggestion! They also have Berry Apple Sauce that my kids love and now they have Pear Sauce, too. My daughter also likes the Cinnamon Applesauce from Wild Harvest Organics.
