Fruit Leathers

Strong chance of a kid meltdown?

07.14.2009

The Bite:
If crankiness from hunger is moving in (toddler freak-outs sometimes = low-blood sugar), avert the raging storm with organic fruit leather snacks. Portable and healthy, they're great for tiding kids over until mealtime. Back to you, Biters.
The Benefits:
  • Fewer cold spells. Organic produce contains more immune-boosting antioxidants than produce sprayed with pesticides.
  • Not raining cats, dogs, or toxins. Many nonorganic fruit snacks contain artificial colors including "Red 40" and "Blue 1," which have been linked to hyperactivity and behavior problems in kids.
  • Keeping it low pressure. We'd all love to be the mom toting sliced fresh fruit in reusable containers, but these healthy snacks are easy when you're in a rush.
Wanna Try:
  • Clif Kids Organic Twisted Fruit - fruit leather ropes, made with fruit puree and juice, 95% organic; six flavors including pineapple and mixed berry; no preservatives or artificial colors; Clif offsets all of its CO2 emissions ($16/18).
  • Bear Fruit Bars - thicker and heartier fruit-leather option; in apple, apple blueberry, and apple raspberry ($6/3).
  • Fruitabu Organic Smooshed Fruit - roll-ups and leathers made of fruit puree and juice; flavors include grape, apple, and strawberry; each roll-up equals an RDA serving of fruit (the leathers equal 1/2 a serving); find a vendor ($4/6).
  • DIY Bite - try this simple, homemade fruit-leather recipe; a good recourse for when you over-buy fruit at the farmers market.

Timeout

Biter Celeste's 3-year-old Nina and 1-year-old Johnny submit to stroller time more agreeably with Fruitabu organic roll-ups in hand.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters feed their kids an organic fruit roll up instead of a conventional one, we'll keep the weight of 100 full-size umbrellas in artificially colored snacks out of our kids' bellies.
