Wearable Teething Jewelry

Tooth and Nail

The Bite:
Fighting like mad to keep your teething baby's mouth off everything, including your jewelry? Pacify your bitty Biter: try mama accessories that double as teethers. These handy bracelets and pendants are stylish and safe for soothing sore gums. Battle over.
The Benefits:
  • Manufacturers plasticize (i.e., soften) PVC with the chemical DINP, a phthalate linked to cancer and organ damage. These pieces steer clear of chemical toxins such as PVC and BPA, and possible allergens like latex.
  • Traditional teethers last a couple of months and end up in the trash. We found jewelry that'll survive many a saliva-soaked attack, so they're reusable for siblings later on, or simply as an accessory.
  • These baubles don't look like teethers, so there's no war between baby's tender gums and your fashion sense.
Wanna Try:
  • Momma's Jewels - a push gift if we ever saw one: sterling silver necklaces and bangles are cool and firm for teething babies; no clasps for safety ($115-$280).
  • Oh Plah - recyclable cuff bracelet made from nontoxic, medical-grade thermoplastic (see picture); free of lead, latex, PVC, and BPA; comes in black, blue, green, gray, and pink ($20).
  • Smart Mom Jewelry - pendants, key chains, and bangles made from nontoxic, dishwasher-safe silicone; phthalate- and latex-free ($16-$20).

Timeout

Monet, 1 month, is still all gums, but mama Reema Hattar is already wearing her colorful Smart Mom bangles she got at her baby shower.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters choose an eco-bracelet that doubles as a teether, instead of a traditional teething ring, we'll keep the weight of 10 street fighters in BPA-tainted plastic away from babies and, later, out of landfills.

Tips Like This

Seriously, am I missing something? I am really disturbed by both tips I received today. Real moms don't wear anything toxic that her baby could put in his or her mouth. Jewelry is for going out-preferably with the baby at home with a sitter. Additionally, this just let's your baby know that it is OK to chew on jewelry-that means anyone's jewelry that might be holding him or her. I'm willing to bet that those people won't be wearing special teething bracelets.
You are totally right! I like the idea of a dual purpose item, but teaching your kiddos to grab for jewelry doesn't seem so brilliant.
