Eco School Fundraising

Wanna up the ante over school bake sales and gift-wrap drives?

The Bite:
We wager that if you ask your kid's school or community org to go with an eco-fundraising program, it will. Instead of kids selling disposable stuff (like anyone needs another mag subscription), they can raise money to help the planet by hawking eco-services and sustainable loot. Winners take all.
The Benefits:
  • Not gambling with resources. These programs help cut down on waste by recycling cell phones for cash or selling reusable lunch containers to avoid plastic baggies.
  • Betting on eco-lessons. Fundraisers centered on recycling, reuse, and conservation teach kids about our impact on the world, and give 'em a chance to articulate it to others.
Wanna Try:
  • Zip Goes Green - sell reusable water bottles and grocery bags printed with your town's zip code; 25% return.
  • Flip Swap - turn used or busted cell phones and iPods into cash; FS will create a website for your fundraiser; on average, earn $30/item.
  • I'm Tired of - sell statement bracelets (see photo) made from recycled metals and tires ("I'm Tired of Global Warming" - get it?); 50% return.
  • Lunch Bots - sell stainless steel lunch containers to reduce lunch waste in schools; 20% return.
  • TerraCycle Brigades - collect waste packaging such as drink pouches, cookie wrappers, and chip bags; includes free shipping bags; earn $0.02-$0.05/piece.
  • Green Student Fundraising - sell organic cosmetics, seed-embedded cards, and dryer balls; GSF will create a website for your fundraiser; 30% return.
Cash Saver:
Mention Mama Bite when your kid signs up for a fundraising program at I'm Tired Of and get five free bracelets for resale.

Mention Mama Bite when you call Zip Goes Green (973-821-4213) to sign up your kid for ZGG's fundraising program, and get free engraving on all Sigg bottles for resale.

Last year for her Bat Mitzvah project, Jade Gardner, 14, of Short Hills, NJ, raised more than $1,000 for the NRDC Polar Bear Relief Fund by selling reusable totes of her own design with the slogan, "This is my shopping bag."

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters help their kids recycle two cell phones each, we'll keep the weight of 1,142 gamblers in electronic waste outta landfills.

Wow! These are super great tips! I get more and more frustrated each year as I move my family into greener, healthier territory and then am asked to support the latest school fund raiser. I am looking forward to proposing these ideas!
