The Bite:
Yes, Mommy (Dearest). Just sign up your squirts for eco day camp. They'll learn about nature, farming, science, and sustainability - and have some kitschy fun while they're at it. No special effects required.
The Benefits:
  • They're worthy of a cult following. Eco-camps are a great combo of fun and learning: Kids'll observe wildlife, take hikes, and build crafts...we wish we could go.
  • Playing in the (Grey) Gardens. These camps incorporate green thinking into their activities, like taking a field trip to a wind farm, planting an organic garden, and composting lunch scraps.
  • Low-budget entertainment. Day camps are a cheaper alternative to sleep-away camps, with costs as little as $5/hour.
Wanna Try:
  • Find a camp near you. Check your local natural history museum, city and state parks, and state nature preserves or Audubon chapter.
  • Briar Bush Nature Center - 1.5-hour to full-day nature day camps outside Philadelphia for ages 2-13; care for critters, investigate habitats, and learn about eco-living ($68-$290/week).
  • Habitot Eco Kids - explore wind power, compost with worms, and make recycled paper at Berkeley, CA, day camp for ages 3-5 ($175-$185/week).
  • Angelic Organics Day Camps - groom horses, learn about ecology, and cook with just-picked produce at working farm outside Chicago for ages 6-12 ($160/4 days).
  • Eco Kids Farm Camp - kids age 5-12 feed and water animals, tend the garden, build a nature trail, plus craft and cook in Buffalo, WY ($135/week).
  • Eco-Kids - 3-day mini camps in Wake County, NC, about birds, bugs, and plants for ages 4-5 ($25).

Timeout

Senior Editor Theresa had a blast at a horse camp in NJ. But the 8-mile steep hike into the campsite with 40-pound bag in tow? Not so fun.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 bitty Biters go to an eco-camp this summer, they'll gain a better respect for the environment and awareness of sustainable living.
