Eco-Websites for Teachers

Want your kids to learn eco-lessons in school that'll register?

The Bite:
Ring up an envirocational website (for parents and teachers). These resources are packed with lesson plans, activities, and links for grades K-5, so pass 'em on to your kid's teacher or bag a few lessons of your own.
The Benefits:
  • One-stop shopping. These sites pull together environmental edu info organized by subject, age group, and even cross-referenced with national science standards to make it easier for teachers to prep for class.
  • Keeping kids from checking out. Lesson plans and activities will help you get your kids excited about earth science (going back to school after a fun summer's another story).
Wanna Try:
  • National Environmental Education Week - lesson plans on topics including climate change, recycling, and school gardens; also: green reading lists for both teachers and kids.
  • North American Association for Environmental Education - activities for pre-K-5 on stuff like animals, habitats, earth elements; deep resource with tons of links to outside topic experts.
  • Environmental Literacy Council - offers primer/refresher info on subjects such as energy, water, and food supply with detailed articles on dozens of subtopics, plus links to classroom activities.
  • EPA Teaching Center - portal and guide to the EPA's maze of education links on major environmental topics (tagged for grades K-12), and quality external links.

Timeout

Mama Bite Editor Alison fondly remembers science field trips in elementary school - except for one that involved tromping through muddy marshland in her brand-new canvas tennies.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 bitty Biters learn more about earth science from their teachers this school year, they'll start to develop the tools for a lifetime of eco-awareness.
