Want your youngun to fraternize with a better toy?

03.27.2009

The Bite:
Initiate a new breed of (party) animal. Introduce 'em to eco stuffed critters made with organic or recycled materials. They're just as cuddly, but won't put your kid, home, or the planet in a chemical haze from synthetic textiles and fillings. Togas optional.
The Benefits:
  • No rush of chems. Conventional toy animals are stuffed with polyester fiber fill, or pellets made from polyethylene or PVC, all of which off-gas chems during production and as they break down.
  • Pledging smaller landfills. Textiles take up about 4% of total landfill space. Plush toys made from recycled or reclaimed textiles helps keep fabrics outta there.
  • Inviting organics to the party. Our picks are covered in 100% certified organic cotton. Regular cotton production uses up 25% of the world's insecticides.
  • Paddle-ing in cleaner water. Organic stuffed animals get their color from plant- and mineral-based dyes, which steer clear of the lead, mercury, and other metals used in most regular dyes.
Personally Speaking:
Jana of Davidson, NC, brought home MiYim's organic stuffed frog for Finn, her 4-month-old. He carries it around everywhere - in his mouth.
Wanna Try:
  • Pear Tree Studio Sweater Critters - handmade animal toys (piglet, penguin, duckling, and elephant) covered with recycled wool sweaters and stuffed with shredded recycled polyester ($26).
  • MiYim Baby Ben Frog - plush frog covered and stuffed with certified organic cotton; veggie- and mineral-dyes; embroidered face features and hemp overalls ($20).
  • Under the Nile Vintage Monkey - plush monkey covered with old-fashioned floral print in organic Egyptian cotton and stuffed with organic cotton; embroidered face features ($16).
  • Eco-babies Custom Teddy Bear - custom bears made from your kiddo's fave dog-eared blanket or other fabric of choice, then stuffed with chopped foam from recycled mattresses; orders take about two weeks; prices vary.

Timeout

Beanie Baby's Peanut - a rare, tiny, royal blue elephant - is one of the most expensive stuffed animals on record, valued as high as $5,000.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 little Biters adopt a stuffed pet made from recycled fabric and stuffing instead of bringing home a new one, we'll keep the weight of 50 beer-chugging frat boys in textiles outta landfills.
