Just for Mom Week - Eco-wine

Wondering what the Dickens to drink after the kids are tucked in?

05.08.2009

The Bite:
Here's a novel idea: You've made it past bath time, PJs, and under-the-bed monster checks, so tip back a glass of rich organic or biodynamic wine. We've got picks you'll love, without chems that'll disappoint the planet. Go ahead, Hav(isham) some.
The Benefits:
  • Health rewards worth the wait. Studies show that organic grapes pack more heart-healthy antioxidants than conventional ones - as if you needed an excuse to drink some.
  • Expecting fewer allergies. Organic wine contains no added sulfites, an allergen; bi-dy wine contains way less than conventional (100 ppm vs. 350 ppm).
  • Romanticizing cleaner farmland. Organic and bi-dy vineyards don't use pesticides (CA alone uses 23 million pounds of pesticides on wine grape crops annually).
Wanna Try:
  • Robert Sinskey - organically farmed vino (see photo) that's pricey for every night sipping, but perfect for special occasions, like when the kids sleep over at Grandma's ($27 and up).
  • Bonterra - always delish, affordable wines (including Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, and Cabernet) made with organically grown grapes ($15 and under).
  • Frey Vineyards - the first organic U.S. winery, family-owned Frey makes sulfite-free wines (like our fave, its 2007 Petite Syrah) that beat out conventional pours ($10-$15).
  • The Organic Wine Company - mail-order peeps that import organically grown wine from every corner of the world and deliver it to your door ($10 and up).
  • Bottlenotes - look for organic and biodynamic wines to begin your collection.

Timeout

Biter Celeste likes to savor a glass (or two) of Frey's Natural Red table wine during those precious 2 hours between when she tucks her kids into their beds and collapses into her own.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters crack a postbedtime bottle of organic wine instead of conventional vino, we'll prevent the weight of 18 books in pesticides from polluting wine country and our bodies.
