Clothing Made in NYC

AA Meeting

05.15.2009

The Bite:
Can't break your addiction…to trendy department store duds? Find your support group at Ale et Ange's groovy subterranean store in Chinatown (blink and you'll miss it). Scoop up gently priced, retro tailored menswear and women's garb - trousers, dress shirts, polos, tees, pick your poison - all handmade in Manhattan. AA sources fabric locally and buys it in small quantities to trim waste and keep everything one-of-a-kind-ish. Another tipsy: It also has habit-forming bath goods.
Why Care?:
Buying locally made threads ensures that your clothes were made in compliance with labor laws (read: no sweatshops) and didn't make the CO2-intensive trip from overseas.
We caved in and snagged a bottle of Bagno Doccia Shower Gel ($6) made with organic aloe vera to prep for beachy weekends.
Wanna Try:
Ale et Ange, 37 Orchard St. (212-219-3670). Men's cotton boxers, $33; women's blouse, $118.

Cocktail Fact

After 35 "dry" years, AA founder Bill W. asked for a shot of whiskey on his deathbed. His request was denied.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters each buy a made-in-NYC tee instead of one imported from China, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as planting 91 full-grown trees.
