Amazing Grape

03.05.2009

The Bite:
Free wine, how sweet the sound. If you were lost, then now you've found…tastings of local vino every Friday (starting at 8 am, ahem) at Union Square Greenmarket and Saturday at Grand Army Plaza's market. Uncorking this weekend: Warwick Valley bottles, like woody Cab, at USG, and Long Island's Sparkling Pointe Vintage Brut (the only NY vineyard that specializes in the fizz) at GAP. At both markets next weekend, grab a pour of America's oldest wine, Brotherhood from upstate - varieties like Pinot Noir and its fruity Riesling (hint of lime) - then finally see the small change add up. These bottles travel 9,119 fewer miles than the South American stuff, cutting way back on CO2. Amazing.
Wanna Try:
CENYC Wine Tastings, The New York Wine & Grape Foundation and Pride of New York stand. Fridays, 8 am-6 pm; Union Square Greenmarket, University Pl. Map It; and Saturdays, 8 am-4 pm; Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, Brooklyn. Map It (212-788-7476). See the full schedule.

Cocktail Fact

The Manhattan cocktail (whiskey and sweet vermouth) was invented by Winston Churchill's mother.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy a bottle of wine from the Hudson Valley instead of one from Chile, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as taking 61 cars off the road for a year.
