City Break: Baltimore

Bal(timore) and Chain

05.18.2009

The Bite:
Feel shackled to NYC this Memorial Day weekend? Cut loose to Baltimore's Inner Harbor for a cheap, waterside break (hop a train or bus). Get vegan snacks and shade-grown, organic, fair-trade coffee at Red Emma's. Then wander around the must-see National Aquarium to gawk at (and gain appreciation for) electric eels, sharks, and other watery things. For dinner: Grub on local fare (jumbo lump crab cakes, anyone?) at The Black Olive, a Greek resto that sources from organic One Straw Farm. Feeling attached? Stay overnight at the Courtyard Baltimore Downtown - chain yes, but with sunny, colorful rooms, plus a towel reuse program, newspaper library (no door to door), and coming this summer, low-flow showers and energy-efficient lighting.

Cocktail Fact

On June 24, 1784, a 13-year-old Edward Warren from Baltimore went airborne alone in the first successful hot air balloon launch in the United States. It was too small to fit the inventor, Peter Carnes.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters drink a cup of organic coffee instead of nonorganic every day, in a year we'll prevent the weight of 345 full coffee pots in pesticides from pouring into the environment.
