Dirty Work

01.08.2009

The Bite:
imageRoll up your sleeves and dig into this Dirt: the newest line of born-again plates from our fave dish designer Sarah Cihat. Dirt includes minimal black and white porcelain cups and bowls decked out in antique decals, and vases with delicate necklace chains. She's got new vintage dish designs too: silhouettes of Abe Lincoln (see photo), a squid, girly things (think baroque mirrors, diamond rings, and florals), as well as, uh, edgier girl-in-noose plates. Like with all of her schmancy dinnerware, Sarah dusts off vintage wares and stencils 'em with quirky images to create one-of-a-kind pieces coated with nontoxic, lead-free glazes...leaving less of a mess on the earth.
Wanna Try:
Rehabilitated Dishware by Sarah Cihat, available at Clio, 92 Thompson St. Map It (212-966-8991). Large dinner plate, $59.

Cocktail Fact

Even for the reality show Dirty Jobs, roadkill taxidermist was deemed "too gross" to air.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy eight rehabilitated plates rather than a set made from new materials, we'll keep the weight of 800 Abe Lincolns in dishware outta landfills.
