The Bite:
Overcrowded Herald Square shops making you cuckoo? Save your sanity at Auto. Owned by a hubby and wife team (they live upstairs), this bright, airy Meatpacking shop sells kinda-pricey-but-totally-original jewelry, bags, and home stuff made by local designers – it's like museum meets shopping, if you’re "just looking" these days. New this season: glass cuff links and colorful tiered hoop earrings from Brooklyn-based Jane D'Arensbourg, and a brown leather purse with an old English bridle handle from Gramercy-based Lucia Nenickova. For home: a funky utility light dripping with vintage crystals and a retro-style, yellow and orange argyle vase made right in Brooklyn. All of it saves on high-CO2-emitting shipping from catalog shopping (and from stuff shipped to H' Square, for that matter). Mad.
