Upcycled Vintage Ties

Family Ties

06.17.2009

The Bite:
Wanna make your Dad look (Michael J.) foxy this Father's Day? Get him a less Reagan era, more hipster vintage tie from Aunt Wilma. Brooklyn-based designer Kim Hamilton scoops up stylin' neckties (paisleys, stripes…) from local thrift stores and uses vintage wool thread to spiff 'em up with embroidered flowers, Xs, stars, and other doodads. Handmade gift? Better than something you'd get at the Mall(ory).
Why Care?:
NYers toss about 193,000 tons of textiles into landfills each year, so gifting Dad a locally embellished vintage tie keeps old ones outta landfills and new ones out of production.
We haven't seen our papa sport a tie since he retired back in '07, but we snagged him a paisley one with lil' sewn-in stars for his next swanky occasion.
Wanna Try:
Aunt Wilma vintage men's ties, available at Tiburon, 392a Van Brunt St., Brooklyn (718-913-4484). Paisley tie, $18.

Cocktail Fact

Alex P. Keaton would be proud: Ronald Regan once said that Family Ties was his favorite TV show.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy their dads a reworked vintage necktie for Father's Day instead of a new one, we'll keep the weight of five Meredith Baxter-Birneys in fabric outta landfills.
