Food for Thought

The Bite:
Pondering what to eat? Let your mind (and body) wander to the Film Forum this Friday for a viewing of Food, Inc. This Fast Food Nation meets An Inconvenient Truth documentary features grub activists Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser chiming in on genetic modification, American obesity, greenhouse emissions, and how they all affect our food choices. We won't lie, parts are tough to watch (inside factory farms = not pretty), but it's eye-opening and will leave you with lots to chew on.
Why Care?:
Learning more about an imperfect national food system helps us make better, healthier choices about what we stuff in our maws.
The film's cartoony segments - like one that showed how much bigger chickens are now than they were in the '50s - helped take the harsh edge off the serious topics.
Wanna Try:
Food, Inc., showing at the Film Forum, 209 W. Houston St. (212-727-8112). Tickets, $11.

Cocktail Fact

The average American eats more than 50 pounds of chicken per year.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters eat only organic, free-range chicken, we'll keep the equivalent of 3 milk gallons in hormones and antibiotics out of our diets.

As a dietitian and eco-cuisine expert, I just want to clear up one point from the corresponding “Small Changes Add Up” sidebar. The facts: There are no hormones ever given to chickens, period! Any statement to the contrary is simply an urban myth. What’s more, it’s against Food and Drug Administration regulations to give hormones to any poultry in the U.S. That means nobody does it. So if you love chicken, keep enjoying it as part of a plant-based “ecotarian” eating plan! Jackie Newgent, RD, author of Big Green Cookbook, http://biggreencookbook.com
