Local Food Market

Frankly, My Dear, I Don't Give an Amsterdam

10.23.2009

The Bite:
Have a love affair with local food? Get your But(ler) to the New Amsterdam Market. Once a month, South Street fills with NY vendors serving up regional grub like goat cheese from Painted Goat Farm, produce from McEnroe Organic Farm, Zucchini Provencal Ravioli from Ravioli Store, and salty, nutty, and sweet Bacon Peanut Brittle from Redhead. Also wine: After a few glasses of the earthy, black cherry Paumanok Merlot you'll be gone (well, tipsy)...with the wind.
Why Care?:
Buying food directly from the farmer who grew or made it usually means it's fresher and required less fuel to get to you than nonlocal food, which travels up to 2 weeks before it arrives in grocery stores.
We're looking forward to wetting our whistle with some Bellwether Hard Cider from upstate NY.
Wanna Try:
New Amsterdam Market; Oct. 25, 11 am-4 pm; South Street Seaport.

Cocktail Fact

Holland has over 9,300 miles of bicycle lanes.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters eat just one meal made with locally grown veggies instead of ones shipped from afar, we'll avert the same amount of CO2 generated by close to 64,000 Yellow taxis in a day.
