The Ice Is Right

01.09.2009

The Bite:
imageCome on down...to the American Museum of Natural History's alternative "ice" rink. This recyclable plastic baby operates energy- and Zamboni-free (and will save about 200,000 gallons of water just this season). It's bigger than Rockefeller's rink (so, plenty of room for you and your flinging arms) and actually hurts less than ice during those inevitable butt-first landings. If you BYO skates (no double blades allowed), the rink's free with museum admission, and you can bone up on polar bears and their regions via facts printed all around the rink...while you showcase showdown your ability to let go of the railing.
Wanna Try:
American Museum of Natural History, 175 Central Park W. Map It (212-769-5100). Skating (and rental) for 1 hour, $10/adults; $9/students and seniors; $8/ages 3-12. Open through Mar. 1.

Cocktail Fact

In 2001, Jimmy MacNeil drove a Zamboni machine across Canada at 9 mph to raise money for the Canadian Hockey Association - it took 4 months to complete the trip.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters skate on synthetic ice rather than real ice this season, we'll save enough water to fill 13 regulation-size rinks.
