The Bite:

Swindled into having to take a plastic bag at Duane Reade? Don't get conned again: Make your own reusable one by turning an old pillow cover into a custom tote. NY-based DIYer and Simply Sublime Bags author Jodi Kahn gave us supereasy step-by-steps with no sewing needed - really, it's not a sham.

It's a Snap Tote
20-25 minutes

What you need:
20-inch square zippered pillow cover (we used a green-striped cotton one)
6 colored snaps (any size or color will do)
48-by-1-inch-wide webbing for straps
fabric marker or chalk
lighter or matches

1. Lay pillow cover flat with the zippered side at top – this will be your bag's opening. Following instructions on the snap package, secure the cover's two bottom corners with snaps to give it shape, like so: Along the vertical side seam, attach a bottom snap on the bottom corner of the case 1/4 inch from the corner. About 3 inches from the bottom snap, attach the top snap. Repeat on other corner. Fold up each bottom end like an envelope flap and snap together.

2. Prepare the straps: Cut the webbing in half to create two 24-inch pieces. Use a lighter or matches to sear/melt (move flame back and forth without touching) the cut edges so they won't fray. Let cool.

3. Attach the straps: On the front side of case, mark 6 1/2 inches from each side and 1 inch down from the top. Attach a bottom snap on each mark and attach a top snap on each strap 1 inch from the end. Repeat on back side of case. Snap straps to case (see photo).

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters opt for a handbag made from repurposed materials rather than new materials, we'll keep the weight of 58 con men in usable materials out of landfills.
