Local Pumpkin Picking

Looking for a Gourd Time?

The Bite:
Then call or just ride a bus to Decker Farm for NYC pumpkin picking in Staten Island's Historic Richmond Town - yep, no need to drive. Trade city life for a colonial town with 16th century homes, museums, and a general store, then pick plump 'kins from rows of pre-cut beauts, get free hay rides for you and the kiddies if you have 'em, and score fresh-made seasonal goodies like homemade pumpkin bread. Satisfying.

Why Care?:
Since most pumpkins in the United States are actually shipped from the Dominican Republic, by opting for local ones, you'll help conserve fuel.
When we finish carving our pumpkin, we plan to rinse off the protein-packed seeds and bake them with melted butter, kosher salt, and little cayenne pepper.
Wanna Try:
Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm, Oct. 24, 25, and 31; 11 am-4 pm. Entrance, $5/person or $16/family of four; pumpkins, $3-$10. Free shuttle bus to farm, leaves from HRT parking lot, accessible via S74 bus; 30 min. ride from Staten Island Ferry terminal.

Cocktail Fact

Irish immigrants brought the tradition of carving to America, originally carving turnips, then switching to pumpkins in America.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy a locally grown pumpkin instead of one grown in the Dominican Republic, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as taking 18 trucks off the road for a year.
