Organic and Grass-fed Meat

Meat Market

04.20.2009

The Bite:
Wanna get a piece? Of prime, grade-A beef. Pick one up ("I lost my number, can I have yours?") at the Gramercy Meat Market, which sells healthier-for-you-and-the-planet cuts of all kinds. Snag grass-fed, organic beef, like short ribs (yum), or grab pork and poultry from suppliers like Organic Valley, and local Pine Plains lamb and ostrich burgers. GMM also peddles prepared foods like homemade meatballs and brisket and, for dessert, there's Woodstock Farms Organic Apricot Applesauce. Come on.
Why Care?:
Compared to grain, grass is better for animals (no need for antibiotics), the planet (requires way less water), and for you (more omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, and cancer-fighting linoleic acid).
We pigged out on the melt-in-your-mouth sweet, tangy pulled pork and BBQ sauce ($10/pound) on a Tom Cat Bakery baguette.
Wanna Try:
Gramercy Meat Market, 383B 2nd Ave. (212-481-1114). Beef short ribs, $8/pound.

Cocktail Fact

Askmen.com lists "Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk past again?" as one of the top 10 worst pickup lines.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters opt for 1 pound of grass-fed beef rather than the conventional stuff, we'll save enough water to fill about 165,200 bathtubs.
