Local Pickles

Is That a Pickle in Your Pocket?

04.06.2009

The Bite:
Nah…we're just happy to see you, Wheelhouse Pickles. Arousing our t-buds, WP jars its Brooklyn-made pickles with a ménage à trois of flavor enhancers, like the pucker-inducing Sour Barrel Cucumbers with garlic, mint, and horseradish, or the sweet-tooth cure-all: brown sugar, mahleb spice, and currant-infused Bread & Butter Pickles. WP's also got pickled okra, turnips, peppers, beans, pears, and beets - what a turn-on.
Why Care?:
If you buy a jar of pickles from a national brand, that jar will have to travel 810 CO2-emitting, fuel-sucking miles versus the 4 miles from WP to this store.
We're currently addicted to slathering goat cheese on top of WP's kinda tart, kinda sweet Irma's Pears.
Wanna Try:
Wheelhouse Pickles, available online or at Whole Foods, 95 E. Houston St. (212-420-1320). Sour Barrel Cucumbers, $6/25 ounces.

Cocktail Fact

During WWII, the U.S. government set aside 40% of all pickle production for the soldiers' ration kits.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters crunch on a jar of locally made pickles instead of ones shipped from a national brand in IL, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as planting 37 trees.
