The Bite:
Mining for jewel tones among racks of light gray/dark gray clothes? Put some sparkle back into your closet with something from Geminola, a West Village spot that's bursting at the seams (seriously, stacked floor to ceiling) with colorful '20s to '40s classic clothes, purses, hats, shoes, and home stuff. Owner Lorraine Kirke hunts down vintage fabrics and clothing from places like the Chelsea Flea Market, then cuts, stitches, and dyes 'em to create handmade, one-of-a-kind, frilly dresses (like the sex-kitten-ish tiered lace trapeze dress we tried, very belly-forgiving too); skirts and blouses; even dainty floral bedding, curtains, and napkins. And by spiffing up old stuff, Gem' cuts down on waste from the production of new materials. It, uh, rocks.
