Green Roofs

Raise the Roof

09.23.2009

The Bite:
Get ready to throw your hands in the air for the USPS: The processing center now rocks a new green roof, the largest in NY. It's only open to postal workers (though you can see a video tour), but here's what it'll do for you: This 2.5 acre garden is filled with native plants like Coral Carpet and Immergrunchen (a low-lying evergreen), which helps reduce CO2 emissions (cleaning NYC air) and soaks up storm water - which can wash up what's in the street, and carry trash and toxic chems into local waterways. Make some noise.
Why Care?:
The green roof not only cleans the air and prevents runoff, but also it helps cut down on heating and cooling at the USPS's Morgan Center by providing insulation and giving local birds, bees, etc. a place to rest.
Even if we can't lounge at this one, we've still got our fave NYC roofs, like the 8,000-square-foot Queens Botanical Garden Green Roof Garden or the High Line.
Wanna Try:
Morgan Processing and Distribution Center Green Roof, 341 Ninth Ave. (800-275-8777).
Queens Botanical Garden Green Roof Garden, 43-50 Main St., Queens (718-886-3800).
High Line, Washington St. from Gansevoort St. to 20th St. Access stairs every two blocks (212-500-6035).

Cocktail Fact

The Morgan Processing and Distribution Center handles 12 million pieces of NYC's mail every day.

Small Changes Add Up

If NY Biters support more green roofs, we'll help lower air pollution, provide wildlife habitat, and stave off storm water.

You can view each of these sites on OASISnyc.net and visualize what the roofs looked like pre-greening, as well as the neighborhood and land use context in which they're situated.
