Rolling in Dough(nuts)

02.20.2009

The Bite:
What's better than cashing in after a weekend in AC? Not much, but shoving a few chubby Tree-Licious Orchards donuts in your mouth is up there. Baking guru Carol Kesler whips up her creations at Tree's NJ Just Made Bakery, then sells 'em every weekend at the Union Square and Grand Army Plaza Greenmarkets. These fluffy, cakey Os look like traditional 'nuts but are light like funnel cakes and sweetened with apple cider made with apples straight from Tree's orchards (instead of artificial flavoring). Get 'em dipped in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar (our pref), and wash it down with a cuppa Nourish's warm organic apple cider. Rich.
Wanna Try:
Tree-Licious Orchards, available Fridays at the Union Square Greenmarket, University Pl. b/t 14th and 16th Sts. Map It; and Saturdays at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, Brooklyn. Map It (212-788-7476). Tree-licious Orchards Apple Cider Donuts, $0.75; $2/3.

Cocktail Fact

In total, Americans eat around 1 billion donuts a year.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy one locally made donut instead of one shipped from, say, a national chain in North Carolina, it'll have the same CO2-reducing effect as taking 857 cars off the road for a year.
