Herb Scavenger Hunt

Sage Advice

06.22.2009

The Bite:
…plus mint, thyme, lavender, and 37 other herb types - get your kids outside for an intro to gardening and cooking with herbs at the NY Botanical Garden. It's fun: Kids pair off in groups, get printed clues (Hi, I'm sage. I have leaves like…), and hunt them down in the Family Garden. Then they start cookin': basil pesto, chive cream cheese, and herbal iced tea with lemon balm and chamomile are all on the menu, plus they bring home a free pot, soil, and seeds to grow their own. Brilliant.
Why Care?:
Being able to identify NYC-grown herbs is a fun way to teach kids about local plants, gardening, and how they relate to food. Plus, growing 'em at home cuts back on fuel needed to transport herbs from afar.
There's no rum on hand at the event, natch, but we're inspired to grow mint on our windowsill for one purpose: mojitos.

Cocktail Fact

Thyme has antiseptic properties - ancient Egyptians used it as a preservative in the mummification process.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters plant two herbs at home instead of buying ones shipped from afar, we'll save 12 gallons of fuel.
