The Bite:
Wanna make your tiny NYC pad Big (well, seem bigger)? Carrie your houseplants off the furni and floor with this space-saving DIY "Plant Parenthood" hanger that you can make with two old T-shirts. Let galpal Megan Nicolay (author of Generation T: Beyond Fashion) show you how.

What You Need:

  • 2 T-shirts
  • Scissors
  • Chalk marker
  • 8 safety pins

Directions:
(follow along with these images)

1. Lay the T-shirts flat on top of each other and cut off the bottom hems. Then with both shirts flat, cut across horizontally to create nine strips 1 1/2 inches thick - these will create a hoop which will be the sides of the hanger. Set aside what's left of the shirts.

2. Cut the strip loops on one end so that you're left with nine long strands, then cluster them all together and fold them in half. Tie all ends together in a tight overhand knot about 3 inches down from the fold to create a loop.

3. Separate the 18 loose cords at the end of the knot into six groups of three. Braid each group into a long braid. Tie the ends of the six braids together in an overhand knot at the bottom.

4. Rest your planter on top of the knot with the six braids surrounding it. On one of the braids, make two marks: one about 1 inch down from the lip of the planter and a second about two-thirds of the way down its side. Remove the planter.

5. Cut two sets of three 1 inch-by-26-inch strips from the remaining top parts of the T-shirts. Attach a safety pin 6 inches from the end of each set, connecting the three strands. Safety pin each end.

6. Select one set, and thread the safety-pinned ends through the vertical braid at the lower mark you made in step 4. Pull all three strips all the way through, stopping when the other safety pin is pressed against the vertical braid. (Let the 6 inches ends dangle.)

7. Braid the horizontal strips you just created for a few inches until you reach the next vertical braid. Thread at least one strand through the vertical braid (acting as an anchor to the vertical braid) and continue braiding on the other side.

8. Repeat until you reach the first braid again. Thread the strands through the braid individually, then tie each hanging strand to a dangling strand from the other end. Remove all safety pins and trim the ends so they are even (still dangling).

9. Repeat steps 6 through 9 with the second set of strips, except start at the higher mark and at the vertical braid opposite the first. Insert your planter and hang it from the loop.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters make a plant hanger out of an old T-shirt instead of tossing the tee, we’ll keep the weight of 338 Sarah Jessica Parkers in T-shirts outta landfills.

Thanks for your great tips on making this unusual plant holder! My friend and I decided to create it at our latest cocktail party :D She brought some t-shirts fitting best for our hand-make fantasy. It seems to me they were promoting a kind of sex toys: a lot of pink, fuchsia and black colors. Thus, now I have the most eccentric piece of my interior I can boast about =)
