Shoots and Ladders

The Bite:
imageVisit the MoMA again or check out something new? Go for the, um, ladder. Next, slide over to the New Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Masters exhibit, where everything's made from...you guessed it. Admission's free tonight only. Go back and forth between 90 sculptures by 23 bambooists (yep, ists), including NY-based artist Stephen Talasnik's Ribbon Candy, plus funky woven masks and intricate wavelike structures all made from the planet's fastest growing renewable resource. Bamboo can grow up to a foot a day (for comparison, oaks take a year to grow that much) and release 35% more oxygen than other trees. Now roll.
Wanna Try:
Japan Society, 333 E. 47th St. Map It (212-832-1155). Exhibit runs through Jan. 11. Admission, $12/adults; $10/students and seniors; free/members and kids under 16, and on Fridays, 6-9 pm.

Cocktail Fact

Over 1 billion people in the world live in bamboo houses.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters use bamboo for art, flooring, or whatever, instead of wood, we'll keep 30,000 less-renewable trees growing.
