Upcycled Home Stuff

Spin Doctor

04.27.2009

The Bite:
Looking to twist your dull digs into a better space? Meet Michael Whitney - who cherry-picks trash and turns it into tres-cool home stuff. This DUMBO-based line spins vintage and salvaged finds into one-of-a-kind awesomeness: think mirrors made out of mud flaps, umbrella chandeliers, door-turned-tables, and a lamp made out of an old wire whisk beater (which we're currently lusting after). Most of it'll keep your wallet in check too - that's no lie.
Why Care?:
Buying accessories made from salvaged objects keeps new materials out of production and old materials outta the landfill.
We're also wish-listing MW's chairs created from downed One Way signs and the Fan Clocks made from vintage fan blades (see photo).
Wanna Try:
Michael Whitney Art & Design, DUMBO showroom visits by appointment. Fan Clocks, $80, available at Spring Design & Art, 126A Front St., Brooklyn (718-222-1054).

Cocktail Fact

The band Spin Doctors reunited in 2001 for the closing of The Wetlands Preserve, a legendary environmental activist bar in TriBeCa.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy a table made from repurposed doors instead of virgin timber, we'll keep more than 200 trees standing.
