The Bite:

Too many totes leaving you with a handbag hangover? Here's a tipsy: Opt for one carryall from Reiter8. The Brooklyn-based company rescues used sails destined for landfills and turns them into superdurable and (obviously) waterproof beach-size totes, messenger bags, and clutches. Our bigger version was roomy enough to keep our shore essentials - oversized towel, lotions, cold beer, uh, books - from capsizing all over the LIRR while the Shortie bags (see photo) make a swell sling for smaller loads. Ship-sharp details, such as grommets, bold graphics, and stripes, vary to make each handmade bag one-of-a-kind. Got an extra sail? ('Cuz who doesn't?) Lucky seadogs get a free bag with every sail donation. Cheers to that.

Wanna Try:
Reiter8, available online or at 3r Living, 276L Fifth Ave. b/t Garfield Pl. and First St., Brooklyn (718-832-0951). Striped Shortie bag, $48.

Cocktail Fact

The biggest sail ever made weighs one ton and requires a 30-foot mast.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 NY Biters buy a tote bag made from recycled sails, we'll keep the weight of nearly 200 sailors in trash out of landfills.
